Hands are taught differently in different places. A term somewhere else is the cheapest way to find out which of your habits are technique and which are just local custom.

Every school teaches a slightly different set of defaults: how long a consultation runs, how much is explained to the patient, when to refer on. Most students never notice their own until they meet someone else's.
The exchange is optional and about a third of each cohort takes it. Those who stay are not disadvantaged: the term abroad covers the same material.
The six-week placement in year five is not optional, but it can be taken in France.

Where the partners are
Fourteen schools, six countries
- United Kingdom
- Four schools. The closest match to our own clinical model, and the easiest exchange to arrange mid-year.
- Spain and Portugal
- Three schools. Strong paediatric and sports caseloads; teaching in Spanish, with a language requirement.
- Belgium and Switzerland
- Four schools. French-speaking, which makes a single-term exchange straightforward.
- Canada
- Three schools in Quebec. A longer commitment, usually a full year, with places allocated by application.
Practical terms
- Eligibility
- Open to year-four students who have passed every year-three assessment at the first attempt.
- Language
- B2 in the teaching language of the host school, evidenced before departure.
- Credit
- A term abroad replaces the same term here and is credited in full. It does not extend the course.
- Cost
- Tuition stays with CARPUS. Travel and accommodation are yours; a mobility grant covers part of it.
- Incoming
- We take up to eight incoming students a year. Teaching is in French, with clinic supervision in English where needed.
Applications close in November.
Exchange places for the following year are allocated in December.
